Ozempic or Wegovy: what is the difference?
Both contain the same medicine, semaglutide. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes, at doses up to 2 mg a week. Wegovy is the version licensed for weight management, at doses up to 2.4 mg a week. Your doctor will prescribe the right product and dose for your needs.
How semaglutide works
Semaglutide copies GLP-1, a hormone your gut releases after eating. It signals fullness to the brain, slows down how quickly the stomach empties and helps regulate blood sugar. Portions feel more satisfying, cravings ease, and weight loss becomes more achievable alongside healthy eating and activity.
In large clinical trials, people taking semaglutide 2.4 mg alongside diet and exercise lost on average about 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks. Individual results vary.
Who is it for?
Semaglutide may be suitable for adults with:
- A body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or
- A BMI of 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or sleep apnoea
Who should not use it
It is not suitable if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, if you or a close family member has had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome, or if you have had pancreatitis. It is also not used for type 1 diabetes or in under-18s. Your doctor reviews your full medical history and current medicines before prescribing.
Your programme, step by step
- Free consultation: we check your weight, BMI, health history and current medicines, and arrange tests if needed.
- Your personal plan: if semaglutide is right for you, your doctor prescribes it and explains how the programme works.
- Weekly injection: a small injection under the skin of the tummy, thigh or upper arm, once a week on the same day. We show you how.
- Gradual dose increases: treatment starts at a low dose (0.25 mg) and is increased step by step, usually every four weeks, to the dose that works for you.
- Regular check-ins: your doctor monitors progress, side effects and health throughout, with lifestyle and nutrition coaching alongside.
Side effects and safety
The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting and indigestion. They are usually mild, mostly happen when the dose goes up, and tend to ease over time. Rarely, more serious problems such as inflammation of the pancreas or gallbladder issues can occur, which is why medical supervision matters. Contact us straight away if you have severe, persistent tummy pain.
Semaglutide or Mounjaro?
Semaglutide acts on one hormone pathway (GLP-1), while Mounjaro (tirzepatide) acts on two (GLP-1 and GIP). The right option depends on your health, how you tolerate the medicine and your goals, and your doctor will help you choose.
What happens when you stop?
Weight can return after stopping if eating habits and activity have not changed. That is why our programme focuses on lasting habits, and your doctor plans the end of treatment and maintenance with you.
