What causes dark underarms?
Most dark underarms come from everyday irritation: shaving, plucking and waxing, tight clothes rubbing, and some deodorants. Each irritation leaves a little extra pigment behind, and it builds up over the years. Less often, darker skin that feels thick and velvety is acanthosis nigricans, which is linked to blood sugar. Your doctor tells the two apart first, because that kind needs its cause treated too.
How does underarm whitening work?
A chemical peel, usually glycolic acid, loosens the darker top layer so it sheds and lighter skin takes its place. It is the peel behind our glycolic chemical peel, at a strength suited to delicate underarm skin. For deeper or stubborn pigment, our picosecond laser breaks the pigment into tiny particles your body clears away.
Both are proven on underarms. In a 2025 review of underarm treatments, a course of five acid peels lightened every patient’s skin by one or two shades, and in a small study four sessions of a pigment laser cut the darkness by 85–100%.
Who shouldn’t have underarm whitening?
Please wait if your underarm skin is broken, irritated or infected, if you have just waxed, or if you take isotretinoin (Roaccutane). If you are pregnant, ask your doctor first. Everything is checked at your consultation.
Your underarm whitening, step by step
- Free consultation: your doctor finds the cause of the darkness and plans peels, laser or both.
- Prepare: stop waxing and plucking, and use a gentle cleanser and the cream your doctor gives you.
- Session: the peel goes on for a few minutes and is neutralised, or the laser passes over the skin; about 20 minutes.
- Course: usually 4–6 sessions, two to three weeks apart.
- Keep it: swap shaving for laser hair removal, choose a gentle deodorant, and book a top-up if needed.
Results and recovery
Underarms start to look lighter after two or three sessions and keep improving through the course. The result lasts when the cause stays away, so the habits in your plan matter as much as the sessions. Thick, velvety darkening linked to blood sugar improves less until its cause is treated.
You may feel tingling for a few minutes, then mild redness for a few hours and sometimes light flaking for a day or two. Most people go straight back to their day.

- No shaving, waxing or plucking for 3–5 days
