What is freckles and dark spot treatment, and how does it work?
Freckles, sun spots and the dark marks left by pimples are small areas where skin has made extra melanin, its brown pigment. First your doctor works out which kind you have: freckles and sun spots sit near the surface, acne marks follow inflammation, and melasma is driven by hormones. A pico laser breaks surface pigment into fragments your body clears, a chemical peel lifts pigmented surface cells to even your tone, and RF microneedling helps stubborn marks. Many plans combine them, with sunscreen at home protecting every result.
Freckles and dark spot treatment benefits
- Clearer skin: freckles and spots visibly lighter, often within two sessions.
- Matched to your spots: laser, peel or both, chosen for your type of pigment.
- Kind to brown skin: settings tuned for skin that darkens easily.
- Quick visits: 20–30 minutes, easy to fit into a lunch break.
- Little downtime: light flaking for a few days, then back to normal.
- A more even tone: less need for heavy concealer every day.
Dark spots from pimples
Dark spots after pimples, which doctors call post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, are very common in brown skin: any inflammation can leave a mark that takes months to fade on its own. Treatment starts by calming active acne, because every new pimple can leave a new mark. Gentle peels and low-energy pico laser sessions then speed up the fading, alongside daily sunscreen and creams such as azelaic acid. If your marks are dents rather than colour, see acne scar treatment.
Freckles and dark spots before and after
Laser-treated spots darken for a few days, then flake off within one to two weeks, leaving lighter skin; after a peel, skin sheds lightly for a few days and looks brighter within a week. In a study of 12 people with freckles, a single pico laser session cleared about three-quarters of them on average. Spots lighten further with each session, and our patients share their own results in the videos below.

Who shouldn’t have freckles or dark spot treatment?
Treatment should wait if you are pregnant, have freshly tanned or sunburnt skin, or an infection or cold sore on the area. A mole or spot that is changing, bleeding or itching needs a doctor’s examination first, and darker skin is treated with gentler settings.
Your freckles and dark spot treatment, step by step
- Free consultation: your doctor identifies your type of pigment and checks any moles.
- Plan: pico laser, peel or a mix, matched to your spots and skin tone.
- Treatment: 20–30 minutes, with numbing cream before laser.
- Course: usually 3–5 sessions, a few weeks apart.
- Upkeep: daily sunscreen and skin creams to stop new spots forming.
Results and recovery
Mild redness and light flaking are common for a few days, and most people carry on with daily life. Freckles and sun spots often look lighter after one or two sessions, and by the end of the course your skin looks clearer and more even. Cleared spots stay away with sun protection, but strong sun can bring freckles back, and melasma improves more slowly and needs ongoing care.
Aftercare
- Use tinted SPF 30+ sunscreen every day
- Let flaking skin fall away naturally
- No make-up for 24 hours after laser
- No gym, sauna or steam for 48 hours
