Ammara shares their carbon laser facial experience at Cutera Aesthetics.
What is a carbon laser peel and how does it work?
A carbon laser peel uses a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, a 1064 nm laser that fires in pulses lasting billionths of a second. First a thin layer of medical carbon lotion is applied and left to dry, so it settles into the pores and the top layer of skin. The laser then heats and shatters the carbon, lifting oil and dead surface cells with it, while gentle warmth reaches deeper skin. Despite the name, nothing flakes afterwards: the “peel” is the laser lifting the carbon away.
Carbon laser facial benefits
- Smaller-looking pores: the carbon and laser clean and tighten the look of open pores.
- Less oil: shine is reduced, so skin stays fresher through the day.
- Calmer breakouts: inflamed spots settle over a course for mild to moderate acne.
- Brighter, smoother skin: dead surface cells lift away for an instant glow.
- Lighter sun spots: pigment breaks into tiny fragments that fade over a few sessions.
- No peeling or downtime: back to work straight after, with only mild redness.
Carbon peel for oily skin, acne and pigmentation
The carbon soaks into oily pores, and the laser’s warmth reaches the glands beneath, so shine and breakouts settle over a course. In a trial, three sessions two weeks apart cut inflamed acne spots by about 59% on the treated side of the face. The same laser breaks up pigment for your body to clear, so sun spots and freckles lighten over two to four sessions. Melasma is tougher and often lightens only partly, so it needs a wider plan with daily sunscreen.
Carbon laser peel before and after
Straight after one session, skin looks brighter and feels smoother, and shine is lower. Over a course, the changes build: in a split-face study, pores were visibly smaller three weeks after the last session and had partly returned by twelve weeks, which is why occasional top-ups keep them small. Our patients share their own results in the videos below.

Who shouldn’t have a carbon laser peel?
It isn’t suitable during pregnancy, with an active cold sore or infection in the area, with sunburn or a fresh tan, or if you take isotretinoin (Roaccutane) or medicines that make you sun-sensitive. Your doctor checks this at your consultation.
Your carbon laser peel, step by step
- Free consultation: your doctor checks your skin and whether a carbon peel suits it.
- Carbon lotion: the skin is cleansed and a thin carbon layer applied and left to dry.
- Laser: the laser passes over your face, lifting the carbon; about 30 minutes in all.
- Course: usually two to four sessions, two to four weeks apart.
- Top-up: a session every month or two keeps pores and oil in check.
Results and recovery
Your skin looks brighter and feels smoother straight away, and pores and oiliness keep improving through the course. Mild redness and warmth usually fade within a few hours, there is no peeling or flaking, and most people go straight back to work. Daily sunscreen and regular top-ups help the results last.
