Lip filler injection

Russian Lips

Want lips that look lifted and shapely, not just bigger? Russian lips is a filler technique in which your doctor sets tiny vertical columns of hyaluronic acid gel across each lip. Instead of pushing the lips forward, it builds height, so you get a defined cupid’s bow and a neat heart shape.

Best for thin or flat lips and a soft, undefined cupid’s bow.

What can Russian lips do for you?

Thin lips that vanish when you smileTaller lips with more on show.
A flat or faint cupid’s bowA crisp, lifted heart shape.
Wanting fuller lips without a poutMore height with a flat side profile.
An unbalanced upper and lower lipBetter balance between the two lips.

How does the Russian lip technique work?

Using a very fine needle, your doctor places small drops of a soft lip filler in a row of upright lines, each running from the base of the lip up to its border, then sharpens the peaks of the cupid’s bow. Because the gel stands vertically, the lips gain height and roll gently outwards with little forward bulk.

In a study of 920 women treated with a vertical technique, 92% rated their lips “very much improved” at two weeks. It trades some size for lift, so it suits anyone who wants shape more than volume.

Who shouldn’t have Russian lips?

We don’t inject lips during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over an active cold sore or mouth infection, or if you’re allergic to hyaluronic acid filler or lidocaine. Tell your doctor about blood thinners, a bleeding disorder and any filler already in your lips.

Russian lips, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor looks at your lip shape, smile and side profile, and checks for old filler.
  2. Numbing: numbing cream rests on your lips for 15–20 minutes while you agree the shape.
  3. Vertical injections: tiny upright lines across each lip, then the cupid’s bow, in about 30 minutes.
  4. Mirror check: you see your new shape, swelling and all, before you leave.
  5. Two-week review: once swelling settles, a small top-up can fine-tune the shape.

Swelling, results and how long they last

Your lips look lifted straight away, then swell for a few days, so the true shape shows at about two weeks. One session adds shape more than size, and very thin lips often reach their goal over two visits a few weeks apart. Results usually last six to twelve months.

Bruising and tenderness are common and fade within days. Because the gel is hyaluronic acid, the enzyme hyaluronidase can dissolve it if a result ever needs correcting.

Russian lips: your questions answered

The price comes down to the amount of filler, usually half to one syringe at a first visit, and the product chosen. Your free consultation ends with a clear price for everything planned, before anything is injected.

If you want a lifted, defined shape rather than a big pout, yes: the change shows the same day and can be reversed. It won’t make very thin lips dramatically full in one visit. If a small chin makes your lips look out of balance, chin filler can do more.

Expect a series of quick pinches, as the technique uses many tiny injection points. Numbing cream and the lidocaine inside most lip fillers keep it very bearable, and a cool pack afterwards eases any tenderness.

You see the lift and shape at once. Swelling then rounds the lips out for a few days, so judge your result at about two weeks, which is exactly when your doctor reviews you.

Expect six to twelve months before the gel is fully absorbed. How long it lasts depends on the filler and the area, and lips move all day. A small top-up keeps the height and heart shape.

With a trained doctor and a genuine filler, yes. Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common and pass within days. Small lumps, or gel drifting above the lip line, are less common and can be dissolved. The rare serious risk is a blocked blood vessel, explained below.

Same gel, different placement. Classic lip fillers are threaded along and inside the lip to add fullness and pout. Russian lips uses upright micro-injections for height and lift, keeping the side profile flatter. Your doctor can blend both.

It is rare, and a UK expert guideline rates the lips a moderate-risk area, lower than the nose or forehead. Warning signs are unusual pain or skin turning pale, then purple and blotchy. Our doctors watch for these and treat at once with hyaluronidase.

Usually, yes. If old filler has drifted above your lip line, your doctor can dissolve it with hyaluronidase first, at the same visit. In a study of 920 women, the 127 who had old filler dissolved first were as satisfied as the rest.

Very much so. In a 2026 study of 67 women having lip filler, 62.7% chose a defined cupid’s bow shape over a plain natural look, rising to 73.9% of those aged 31–40. Your doctor will say plainly whether it suits your face.

Yes, with the right timing. Book three to four weeks ahead, which leaves room for swelling and bruising to clear and for your review. First-timers can try it a few months earlier to be sure they love the shape.
