Facial Laser Hair Removal

Facial Laser Hair Removal

Tired of threading your upper lip every week, or plucking stray hairs from your chin? Facial laser hair removal is a series of quick laser sessions that weaken the roots of dark facial hair, so far less grows back on the upper lip, chin and sides of the face, and threading becomes rare.

Best for dark hair on the upper lip, chin, jawline and sideburns.

Can laser help with facial hair?

Upper lip hairA cleaner upper lip, with far less threading.
Chin and jawline hairFar fewer coarse hairs to pluck each week.
Hair linked to PCOSMuch less regrowth, with hormone care alongside.
Bumps and marks from threadingCalmer, clearer skin once plucking stops.

How does facial laser hair removal work?

The laser’s light homes in on the dark pigment in each facial hair, and the heat it creates damages the root that grows it. Coarse, dark chin hairs respond especially well; finer, softer hair on the upper lip takes a little longer.

Hormones play a big part. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and other hormone conditions keep stimulating facial hair, so it returns sooner. If your hair appeared suddenly, is heavy or grows in a male pattern, your doctor can arrange hormone tests first, helping your results last longer.

Who shouldn’t have facial laser hair removal?

It isn’t suitable during pregnancy, on skin with inflamed acne or cold sores, after a recent tan, or for grey, white or very fair hair. Do mention any hormone treatment or isotretinoin. Your doctor checks this at your consultation.

Facial laser hair removal, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor looks at your hair pattern and asks about periods, PCOS and medicines.
  2. Preparation: shave or trim the area a day before, and put the threading on hold.
  3. Treatment: your eyes are shielded and cooled pulses cover the area in 10–20 minutes.
  4. Course: usually 4–6 sessions about a month apart; some faces need a few more.
  5. Top-ups: short, occasional sessions whenever hormonal hair reappears.

Results, top-ups and recovery

Hair thins out session by session, and threading appointments become rare. The face is the one area where hormones keep working against you: the AAD notes they stop it staying hair-free, so most women book short top-ups to keep that clean look.

Any pink skin or small raised bumps around the follicles fade within a few hours to a day or two, and you can usually wear make-up again the next day.

Aftercare

  • No make-up for 24 hours
  • Use sunscreen; avoid strong sun for 2 weeks
  • Don’t thread, wax or pluck between sessions
  • Skip steam rooms and saunas for a day

Facial laser hair removal: your questions answered

The price depends on how many facial areas you treat, for example upper lip only or the full face, and on the number of sessions. Your doctor quotes the whole course at your free consultation, before you commit to anything.

For dark hair on the upper lip or chin, yes: it frees most women from weekly threading and plucking. It won’t help pale, fine fuzz. If darkened skin on the upper lip bothers you more than hair, try pigmentation treatment.

The upper lip is one of the more sensitive spots, so each pulse can sting for a second. Sessions are short, the skin is cooled throughout, and numbing cream can be applied first if you prefer.

Treated hairs shed within a few weeks. Most women see thinner, sparser growth after two or three sessions; hormonal hair on the chin can take a little longer to settle.

Some can. The FDA describes laser results as “permanent hair reduction”: a long-term drop in hair, not total removal. Because hormones can stimulate new facial hair, a quick top-up now and then keeps your face smooth.

Yes, with a doctor choosing settings for your skin. Brief redness and bumps are common, and your eyes are shielded throughout. Cold sores can flare around the mouth, so mention them; uncommonly, skin colour can change.

Yes, and it can make a real difference to how you feel. A study from Pakistan of 172 women with PCOS found laser improved their quality of life. Some hair returned by six months, so treating the hormones too helps results last.

It’s a good idea if hair appeared suddenly, is heavy, or comes with irregular periods or acne. Reviews advise checking hormones such as testosterone, because an untreated imbalance makes hair return faster after laser.

Facial follicles are very sensitive to hormones, which shift with PCOS, the menopause and some medicines. New hairs can keep appearing over the years, so most women simply book a short top-up whenever regrowth shows.

Not reliably. Laser needs pigment to target, and pale, downy hair absorbs too little light. In a study of Indian women treated on the chin and upper lip, coarse hair responded far more reliably than finer hair.

No, because the laser needs the root in place to work. Shaving or trimming is fine, and after the first few treatments most women find there is little left to trim.

Yes, and starting early is the secret to a smooth, camera-ready face. Begin six to eight months ahead so several sessions are done, book your last one at least two weeks before the day, and don’t start a new course in the final month.
