Do you have a tattoo you’ve outgrown, or one that no longer fits your life? Laser tattoo removal uses a picosecond laser to shatter the ink into tiny particles that your body clears away, so the tattoo fades further with every session, whether you want it gone or light enough for a cover-up. Sessions take 10–30 minutes, from about Rs 12,000 a session in a course of 3.

Best for black and dark blue tattoos, amateur tattoos and fading before a cover-up.

Which tattoos can laser tattoo removal help with?

Black and dark blue tattoosThe ink fades the most, often clearing fully over a course.
Amateur or home-made tattoosLess ink, set less deeply, so they often clear in fewer sessions.
Coloured tattoosClear fading over a course; red often responds well, green is harder.
A name or design you’ve outgrownFaded session by session until it is gone or barely visible.
Fading for a cover-upLighter ink in a few sessions, so a new design covers it well.
Cosmetic eyebrow or lip-liner tattoosCareful treatment after a test spot, because some inks can darken.

What is laser tattoo removal and how does it work?

Tattoo ink sits deep in the skin, in particles too large for your body to clear. Laser tattoo removal uses a picosecond laser, whose pulses last a trillionth of a second, to shatter that ink into much finer particles, mainly with a pressure wave rather than heat. Your immune system then carries the ink away over the following weeks, so each session clears another layer, and sessions are spaced about eight weeks apart.

Laser tattoo removal benefits

  • Fades layer by layer: each session clears more ink, until it is gone or faint.
  • Fewer sessions: picosecond pulses break ink finer than older lasers.
  • Less heat: gentler on the surrounding skin, with scarring uncommon.
  • Treats several colours: black, dark blue and red respond best.
  • Short visits: 10–30 minutes, depending on the tattoo’s size.
  • Cover-up ready: a few sessions lighten old ink for a new design.

Pico laser tattoo removal: how many sessions?

Most professional tattoos need 6–12 sessions or more, about eight weeks apart, so plan on a year or longer; no laser removes a tattoo in one session. Small, black, amateur tattoos on the face or neck clear fastest, while large, colourful or layered tattoos on the hands, feet or lower legs take longer. A picosecond laser breaks ink finer than an older Q-switched laser, and studies report tattoos clearing in fewer sessions. Your doctor estimates your number at the consultation, after looking at the ink, its colours and its age.

Tattoo removal before and after

Your tattoo looks lighter in the weeks after each session, and the change adds up visit by visit: most people see a clear difference after the first few sessions. In a study of 100 patients, removal took about 10 sessions on average, with a range of 3 to 20. Amateur tattoos often finish sooner, while some ink, or a faint outline, can remain, especially green or yellow.

Who shouldn’t have laser tattoo removal?

It isn’t suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with a weakened immune system, on a fresh tan, or with an infection in the area. Tell your doctor if you form raised scars or take medicines that make your skin sun-sensitive.

Your laser tattoo removal, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor assesses the ink, colours, age and your skin tone, and estimates sessions.
  2. Test spot: a small area is treated first, especially on brown skin or cosmetic tattoos.
  3. Treatment: numbing cream, then laser pulses for 10–30 minutes, depending on size.
  4. Course: often 6–12 sessions or more, about eight weeks apart.
  5. Review: your doctor checks fading and healing before each session.

Results and recovery

Expect redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding and sometimes small blisters for a few days, and the area may feel like sunburn for a day or so. Lighter or darker patches can follow, more often on brown skin, and usually fade within 6–12 months; scarring is uncommon with careful settings. The ink keeps fading for weeks after each session, and ink that your body has cleared does not come back.

Aftercare

  • Keep it out of the sun for 3 months
  • Don’t pop blisters or pick scabs
  • Use ointment and cover until healed
  • No gym, sauna or swimming for 48 hours

Many black and dark blue tattoos fade completely or almost completely over a full course, but no laser removes a tattoo in one session. Some colours, especially green and yellow, can stay faint, and a ghost outline sometimes remains. Ink your body has cleared does not come back, and a cover-up can hide anything left.

Yes, when a doctor sets the laser for your ink and skin tone. It feels like a rubber band snapping on the skin, and numbing cream is applied first. Expect redness, swelling and sometimes blisters for a few days. Lighter or darker patches are more likely on brown skin and usually fade within months.

Often, yes. Black and dark blue respond most and red often responds well, while green and yellow are harder and may stay faint. Cosmetic eyebrow and lip-liner tattoos can contain white, red or skin-coloured inks that turn darker when lasered, so your doctor treats a small test spot first and checks it after 4–6 weeks.

No. Dermatologists warn that tattoo removal creams don’t remove the ink, because it sits too deep in the skin, and some can burn, scar or cause an allergic reaction. A laser is the method dermatologists recommend for removing a tattoo safely, which is why every session here is planned and performed by a doctor.

A cover-up is quicker if you would like a new design, but a dark, bold tattoo is hard to hide. A few laser sessions often lighten the old ink enough for a tattoo artist to work over it neatly. If you want no tattoo at all, a full course of laser tattoo removal is the answer.

Both break up tattoo ink. A picosecond laser fires far shorter pulses, breaking ink into finer particles with less heat, and studies report tattoos clearing in fewer sessions. A Q-switched laser can still fade many tattoos, but usually needs more visits. See pico laser for how it also treats pigmentation.

It is best to wait. Tattoo removal isn’t done during pregnancy or breastfeeding, because your body has to carry the broken-up ink away and there is little safety data. Start or continue your course once you have finished breastfeeding; the tattoo will wait, and your doctor plans the remaining sessions then.

Plan well ahead. Tattoo removal takes a year or more, so start as early as you can. Keep your last session at least four to six weeks before the day, so redness, blisters and scabs have healed, and the treated skin is ready for mehndi and make-up.

There is no evidence that laser tattoo removal causes cancer. The laser breaks the ink into tiny particles that your body clears away over the following weeks; long-term research on those particles is still limited, which is one reason removal waits until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
