How lip fillers work
Lip fillers use hyaluronic acid, a substance your body already makes that holds on to water. Soft fillers designed specifically for the lips are placed with fine injections to build shape and volume exactly where you want it. Most lip fillers also contain a local anaesthetic, which keeps the treatment comfortable.
Classic lips or Russian lips?
Classic lip filler adds volume and projection, so the lips look fuller from the side, while the shape stays close to your natural lips.
Russian lips use a different technique: small amounts of filler are placed vertically from the base of the lip towards the border. This lifts the lips upwards rather than outwards, creating a flatter profile, a raised cupid’s bow and a defined, heart-shaped look. Your doctor will tell you honestly which style suits your lip shape.
Who are lip fillers for?
- Adults who would like fuller, more defined or more balanced lips
- Lips that have thinned or lost definition with age
- Fine vertical lines around the mouth
Lip fillers are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding or with an active infection around the mouth. If you get cold sores, tell your doctor, as you may need preventive medication before treatment.
Your lip filler treatment, step by step
- Free consultation: we discuss the look you want, examine your lips and agree on a plan and amount of filler.
- Numbing: a numbing cream is applied for 15–20 minutes.
- Treatment: the filler is placed with fine injections, usually taking 20–30 minutes.
- Check: you review the result in the mirror before you leave.
Results and how long they last
You will see a difference straight away. Swelling is usually most noticeable for the first day or two and settles over about two weeks, when you see your final result. Lip fillers typically last six to twelve months, depending on the product and your metabolism.
Recovery and aftercare
Swelling, tenderness and small bruises are common and fade within a few days.
- Avoid lipstick and lip products for 24 hours
- Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and alcohol for 24 hours
- Avoid pressing or massaging your lips unless your doctor advises it
- Sleep on your back on the first night if you can
Is it safe?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are widely used and well tolerated, and because they can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, the result is reversible. As with any filler, rare but serious complications, such as a filler blocking a blood vessel, can occur. That is why fillers should only be injected by a qualified doctor who knows facial anatomy and can act immediately if needed. At Cutera Aesthetics, every filler treatment is performed by our doctors.
