Fractional Radio Frequency

Fractional Radio Frequency

Do rough texture, open pores, fine lines or old acne scars make your skin look tired up close? Fractional RF is a skin-resurfacing treatment: a grid of tiny pins sends radiofrequency heat into the skin in microscopic dots, so it renews itself with fresh collagen for smoother, clearer, more even skin.

Best for uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines and shallow acne scars.

Rough, uneven textureSmoother, more even skin.
Enlarged poresSmaller, tidier-looking pores.
Fine linesSofter lines and firmer-feeling skin.
Shallow acne scarsShallower, less noticeable scars.

How does fractional RF work?

A handpiece with a grid of tiny electrode pins rests on the skin and sends radiofrequency heat down in microscopic columns. Only a fraction of the skin is treated, with healthy skin left between the dots, so it heals fast. No needles go into the skin.

Each dot gently resurfaces the top layer and heats the layer beneath, sparking a wave of new collagen. Your doctor sets the energy for your skin type, which matters for brown skin. In studies, it matched laser for acne scars, with fewer dark marks afterwards.

Who shouldn’t have fractional RF?

It isn’t suitable during pregnancy, with active acne, cold sores or infection in the area, with a pacemaker or other electrical implant, or if you form keloid scars. Mention isotretinoin use. Your doctor checks this at your consultation.

Fractional RF, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor checks your skin type and concerns, and plans your course.
  2. Preparation: the skin is cleansed and numbing cream is applied.
  3. Treatment: the pin tip passes over the skin, taking about 20–30 minutes.
  4. Course: usually 3–5 sessions, about 4 weeks apart.
  5. Top-up: once or twice a year to keep results going.

Results and recovery

Your skin feels smoother within a couple of weeks. Texture, pores and lines keep improving through the course, and the full result shows about three months after your last session, as new collagen builds.

Expect redness, slight swelling and a pattern of tiny dots or small scabs for a few days. Most people go back to work within a day or two. Darkening of the skin is uncommon and usually fades.

Aftercare

  • No make-up for 24–48 hours
  • Don’t pick or scratch the tiny scabs
  • No gym, sauna or steam for 24–48 hours
  • Wear sunscreen and avoid strong sun

Fractional RF: your questions answered

It depends on the area treated and how many sessions you need. Your doctor confirms the full price at your free consultation, before anything is done. Most people need three to five sessions, so ask for the price of the whole course.

For rough texture, enlarged pores, fine lines and shallow acne scars, yes: it visibly improves skin quality with short downtime, and with careful settings it suits brown skin. It won’t lift sagging skin; for that, radiofrequency skin tightening or HIFU is the better choice.

It feels like warm prickling or snapping on the skin. Numbing cream is applied first, and in studies most people rated the discomfort as mild. Your doctor adjusts the energy to keep you comfortable.

Your skin feels smoother within one to two weeks. Results build through the course, and the full effect shows about three months after your last session, as new collagen forms.

The new collagen stays, so smoother texture and softer scars are long-lasting, though your skin keeps ageing naturally. One or two top-up sessions a year keep your skin looking fresh.

Yes, when a trained doctor sets it for your skin type. Expect redness, slight swelling and tiny dots or scabs for a few days. Darkening of the skin is uncommon and usually fades; careful settings and daily sunscreen lower the risk.

Both use radiofrequency to rebuild collagen. Fractional RF delivers heat through pins resting on the skin, resurfacing the upper layers. Microneedling RF places fine needles into the skin to heat deeper layers, which suits deeper scars and looser skin.

Both resurface the skin in tiny dots. In studies, fractional RF worked as well as laser for acne scars, with a lower risk of dark marks afterwards, which matters for brown skin. Your doctor advises which suits your skin.

Yes, especially shallow scars and the rough texture around them, with clear improvement after just three sessions in studies. Deeper scars often need a combination, such as RF microneedling for acne scars or a TCA peel.

Yes, it makes enlarged pores look smaller and skin look tidier over a course, by firming the skin around them. Pores never vanish completely, and oily skin benefits from a skincare plan alongside.

Usually three to five, about four weeks apart, depending on your skin and concerns. Your doctor sets the plan at your consultation, then suggests a top-up once or twice a year.

Yes, but start early. Begin four to six months ahead, so the course is complete and your skin has fully settled. Leave at least two weeks after your last session, while redness or tiny dots could still show.
