Scalp Microneedling

Scalp Microneedling

Is your hair getting thinner on top, with a little more scalp showing each month? Scalp microneedling is a doctor-led treatment that makes tiny, controlled channels in the scalp to wake up thinning hair follicles. Paired with minoxidil, it grows noticeably more hair within about three months.

Best for early pattern thinning in men and women, alongside minoxidil.

What can scalp microneedling help with?

Thinning on top or at the crownDenser hair within about three months.
A widening partingA narrower, less visible parting.
Fine, weak hairsThicker, stronger strands.
Slow progress with minoxidil aloneA much stronger response when combined.

How does scalp microneedling work?

Your doctor moves a sterile microneedling device over the thinning areas, creating many tiny channels in the scalp. Devices for hair use slightly longer needles than those for the face. This controlled micro-injury releases growth factors that wake up sleepy hair follicles.

Paired with minoxidil, the results are impressive. In a trial of 100 men, the microneedling group gained 91 hairs per square centimetre in 12 weeks, against 22 with minoxidil alone, and a 2025 review of 12 trials confirmed denser, thicker hair. It boosts hair that is thinning, though it can’t regrow a fully bald area.

Who shouldn’t have scalp microneedling?

Scalp microneedling isn’t advised in pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an infected or broken scalp, a psoriasis flare, a bleeding disorder, or if you form keloid scars. Patchy or scarring hair loss gets a doctor’s diagnosis first, which your free consultation covers.

Scalp microneedling, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor finds the cause of your thinning, with blood tests if needed.
  2. Preparation: the scalp is cleaned and a numbing cream is put on.
  3. Treatment: the device is passed over the thinning areas, taking about 30 minutes.
  4. Course: every 1–4 weeks for about three months, as your doctor plans.
  5. At home: daily minoxidil, restarting 24 hours after each session.

Results and recovery

Shedding often slows in the first weeks, and the trials measured clear gains in hair count and thickness at three months. Your hair keeps improving with ongoing care, and regular upkeep holds the result, because hereditary thinning carries on in the background.

Redness, tenderness and tiny pin-point bleeding settle within a day or two; you can usually work the next day. Mild itching can last a few days.

Aftercare

  • Wait 24 hours before washing your hair
  • Don’t scratch or touch the scalp for a day
  • No gym, sauna or swimming for 24–48 hours
  • Cover your scalp in the sun for a week

Scalp microneedling: your questions answered

The cost depends on how much of the scalp is treated, the number of sessions and whether PRP is added. Your free consultation gives you the full price before any treatment. Ask what the whole course will cost.

Yes, for early pattern thinning, used with minoxidil: in one trial, 82% of men reported more than 50% improvement, against 4.5% on minoxidil alone. If you can’t use minoxidil, PRP for hair loss is the better route.

Only a little. Numbing cream goes on first, then you feel a prickling or scratching sensation as the device moves. Your scalp can feel tender, like after mild sunburn, for a day.

Give it about three months. The main trials measured clear gains in hair count at 12 weeks, while minoxidil on its own often takes six to twelve months to show its full effect.

As long as you keep treating the cause. Hereditary thinning keeps going, so most people continue minoxidil and have occasional maintenance sessions to hold on to their new hair.

Yes, when a trained doctor uses a sterile device. A 2025 review found side effects mild and short-lived: redness, tenderness and tiny pin-point bleeding for a day or two, sometimes itching. It isn’t done over infected or broken skin, or if you form keloid scars.

Yes, it is strongly advised. The standout results in studies come from the combination, as the two work together. Your doctor explains how to use minoxidil and when to restart it after each session.

They work well together. Microneedling makes tiny channels; PRP for the scalp delivers growth factors from your own blood. Many plans combine them for a double boost, and your doctor builds yours around your scalp.

It is safer to leave it to the clinic. Home rollers can be the wrong length, are hard to keep sterile and can worsen some scalp conditions. In clinic, the device, depth and hygiene are all controlled for you.

Yes, it is used for female pattern thinning, which usually shows as a widening parting. Your doctor first checks for causes common in women, such as low iron or thyroid problems, so your plan targets the real cause.

It thickens thinning hair; where follicles have stopped for good, it can’t regrow a fully bald area. Smooth, round bald spots may be alopecia areata, a separate condition with its own treatment. We don’t perform hair transplants, and your doctor explains whether one is worth considering.

Yes, but start early. Begin at least four months ahead, so your hair has time to respond. Have your last session at least a week before, so any redness or tenderness has gone.
