How Mounjaro works
Tirzepatide acts on two natural gut hormone pathways, GLP-1 and GIP, which are released after you eat. Together they signal fullness to the brain, slow down how quickly the stomach empties and help the body manage blood sugar. You feel satisfied with smaller portions, cravings ease, and losing weight becomes far more achievable alongside healthy eating and activity.
In large clinical trials, people taking tirzepatide together with diet and exercise lost on average about 15–21% of their body weight over 72 weeks, depending on the dose. Individual results vary.
Who is it for?
Mounjaro may be suitable for adults with:
- A body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or
- A BMI of 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or sleep apnoea
Who should not use it
It is not suitable if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, if you or a close family member has had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome, or if you have had pancreatitis. It is also not used for type 1 diabetes or in under-18s. Your doctor reviews your full medical history and current medicines before prescribing.
Your programme, step by step
- Free consultation: we check your weight, BMI, health history and current medicines, and arrange tests if needed.
- Your personal plan: if Mounjaro is right for you, your doctor prescribes a starting dose and explains how the programme works.
- Weekly injection: a small injection under the skin of the tummy, thigh or upper arm, once a week on the same day. We show you how.
- Gradual dose increases: treatment starts at 2.5 mg and is increased step by step, usually every four weeks, to the dose that works for you, up to a maximum of 15 mg.
- Regular check-ins: your doctor monitors your progress, side effects and health throughout, with lifestyle and nutrition coaching alongside.
Side effects and safety
The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, indigestion and reduced appetite. They are usually mild, happen mostly when the dose is increased, and tend to ease over time. Rarely, more serious problems such as inflammation of the pancreas or gallbladder issues can occur, which is why medical supervision matters. Contact us straight away if you have severe, persistent tummy pain.
Tirzepatide can make the contraceptive pill less effective, especially after starting and after each dose increase, so your doctor will advise you on additional contraception.
Mounjaro or Ozempic?
Mounjaro acts on two hormone pathways (GLP-1 and GIP), while Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide) act on GLP-1 only. In studies, tirzepatide led to greater weight loss on average, but the right choice depends on your health, how you tolerate the medicine and your goals. Your doctor will help you decide.
What happens when you stop?
Weight can return after stopping if eating habits and activity have not changed. That is why our programme focuses on building lasting habits, and your doctor will plan the end of treatment and maintenance with you.
