How does Keravive work?

Keravive, now called HydraScalp with Keravive, comes from The Hydrafacial Company, the American maker of Hydrafacial. Light suction and exfoliation lift oil, flakes and styling build-up from the scalp and open the hair follicles. A serum of peptides, niacinamide, vitamin B5 and arginine is then worked into the clean scalp.

The maker’s own studies report fuller, shinier-looking hair after three monthly sessions. It is a great partner to medical hair treatment, giving your roots a clean, nourished scalp to grow from, though it can’t regrow a fully bald area.

Who shouldn’t have Keravive?

It isn’t suitable with an open wound, sunburn or infection on the scalp, a flare of scalp psoriasis, or an allergy to any of its ingredients. Sudden or patchy hair loss gets a doctor’s diagnosis first, at your free consultation.

Keravive treatment, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor examines your scalp and looks for the cause of any hair fall.
  2. Preparation: your hair is parted into sections; no numbing is needed.
  3. Purify: light suction and exfoliation clear oil, flakes and build-up.
  4. Nourish: a peptide serum is infused, taking 30–60 minutes in all.
  5. Course: usually 3 sessions, one month apart.

Results and recovery

Your scalp feels cleaner and less itchy straight away, and hair looks shinier and fuller after the very first session. For thinning hair, Keravive works best as part of a medical hair-loss plan, and the maker measured its results after a course of three.

There is no downtime, so you can go back to work or college straight after. Mild redness or a tingling scalp can last a few hours.

Aftercare

  • Leave the serum in; wash hair the next day
  • No sauna, steam or hard workouts for 24 hours
  • No hair colour or rebonding for a few days
  • Cover your scalp in strong sun

Keravive: your questions answered

It depends on whether your whole scalp or only part of it is treated, and how many sessions you need. You hear the full price at your free consultation, and only then decide. Most plans are a course of three, so check the cost of all three.

Yes, for an oily, itchy or flaky scalp and flat hair: it is a relaxing treatment with no needles and no downtime. It isn’t a cure for hereditary thinning or bald patches; for thinning hair, PRP for hair loss has stronger research behind it.

No. It is non-invasive, with no needles. You feel light suction moving across your scalp and a cool serum, rather like a scalp massage, so no numbing is needed.

Your scalp feels cleaner and your hair lighter and shinier on the day. Fuller-looking hair builds over a course, and the maker’s own results were measured after three monthly sessions.

The clean, fresh feel lasts a few weeks, as oil and build-up slowly return. Many people come back every few months to keep their scalp in great shape, and your doctor suggests a routine for you.

Yes, it is one of the gentlest scalp treatments. Mild redness or tingling can last a few hours. It isn’t done over open wounds, sunburn, an infection or a psoriasis flare, so tell your doctor about any scalp condition or allergy.

Not on its own. Hair fall has many causes, such as genes, hormones, low iron, thyroid problems, illness or stress. Your doctor finds the cause first, sometimes with blood tests, then plans treatment, with Keravive keeping your scalp healthy alongside.

No. It can’t regrow a fully bald area, as those follicles have stopped. Bald circles that appear suddenly can be alopecia areata and need medical care. Cutera Aesthetics doesn’t offer hair transplants; if one would suit you, your doctor will say so.

For thick, stubborn flakes, a scalp peel targets dandruff more directly. Keravive is gentler and adds hydration and peptides, so it suits an oily or flat-feeling scalp. Your doctor can use both in one plan.

Keravive cleans and hydrates the scalp surface with no needles. PRGF hair treatment and PRP use growth factors from your own blood, placed in thinning areas, and have more research for hair loss. They combine well.

It comes from the same maker and uses a similar cleanse-then-hydrate idea, but it is made for the scalp, with its own serum and a take-home spray in the maker’s plan. For your face, see our Hydrafacial for glowing skin.

Yes, and with no downtime it can be close to the day. Book a session about a week before, so your hair is fresh, light and shiny for styling. For the full course, start about three months earlier.
