How Sculptra works
Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible material that has been used in medicine for decades, including in dissolvable stitches. Injected into the deeper layers of the skin, its microparticles act as a scaffold that prompts the skin to produce new collagen. Over time the PLLA is naturally broken down by the body, leaving your own collagen behind.
Because collagen builds slowly, Sculptra is given as a course of sessions, and the improvement continues for several months after your last treatment.
Who is Sculptra for?
- Adults with volume loss in the cheeks, temples or along the jawline
- People with thinning, less elastic skin who want a gradual, natural improvement
- Anyone who wants longer-lasting results than hyaluronic acid fillers usually give
Sculptra is not used in the lips or directly around the eyes. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active skin infection, or for people prone to keloid scarring. Your doctor will advise whether Sculptra, a hyaluronic acid filler or a skin booster such as Profhilo suits you best.
Your Sculptra treatment, step by step
- Free consultation: your doctor assesses volume loss and skin quality and plans the number of vials and sessions.
- Preparation: Sculptra is mixed with sterile water ahead of time, usually with a local anaesthetic for comfort.
- Treatment: small injections are placed in the deeper skin layers, taking about 30–45 minutes.
- Course: most people need two to three sessions, about four to six weeks apart.
- Massage at home: you massage the area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days, to help the product spread evenly.
Results and how long they last
Straight after treatment the area can look fuller because of the water used to mix Sculptra. This settles within a few days. The real result then develops over the next two to three months as collagen builds. Results can last up to two years, and a maintenance session can be considered once you start to notice change.
Recovery, aftercare and side effects
Swelling, tenderness, redness and bruising at the injection sites are common for a few days. Small lumps under the skin can occasionally occur, which is why careful technique and the massage routine matter.
- Follow the 5-5-5 massage routine exactly as shown
- Avoid heavy exercise, saunas and other facial treatments for a few days
- Use a wrapped ice pack to ease any swelling
- Wear sunscreen every day
