Wrinkles & Fine Lines (Jhurriyan)

Lines on your forehead or around your eyes that stay even when your face is still? Wrinkles (jhurriyan) form as skin loses collagen and moisture and the same expressions crease it every day. Botox softens lines from movement in 3–5 days, while boosters and RF microneedling smooth fine lines by rebuilding the skin, so the right plan depends on which kind you have.

Also known as jhurriyan, rhytides or expression lines.

Is this you?

  • Forehead lines or a frown line between the brows
  • Crow’s feet that show when you smile
  • Fine lines that stay even when your face is still
  • Skin that looks thinner, drier or less springy than before

See a doctor first if one side of your face suddenly droops, or a patch of skin quickly changes colour or texture.

What causes wrinkles and fine lines?

  • Sun UV breaks down collagen and causes most visible skin ageing, so daily sunscreen matters at any age.
  • Repeated expressions Frowning, squinting and smiling crease the same lines every day, until they stay.
  • Collagen loss with age Skin makes less collagen each year, so it gets thinner and less springy.
  • Smoking and pollution Both damage collagen and speed up lines, especially around the mouth.
  • Dry skin Dehydrated skin shows fine lines more, which is why hydrating boosters soften them quickly.

What results to expect

Botox softens forehead lines and crow’s feet in 3–5 days, with the full effect at two weeks, and lasts 3–4 months. Boosters such as Profhilo bring a glow within days and their full effect at 8–12 weeks. Collagen-building treatments are slower but last longer: in a multicentre study, one Thermage session smoothed eye-area wrinkles in 83% of treated areas.

The honest limit: no treatment stops ageing. Your skin keeps changing, so results are kept with top-ups, Botox every 3–4 months and boosters about twice a year, and with daily sunscreen.

Caring for your skin at home

  • Sunscreen every day: SPF 30 or higher, all year, because UV breaks down collagen.
  • A retinoid at night, if your doctor recommends one: it is the best-studied cream for fine lines. Start slowly, as it can sting at first.
  • Moisturise morning and night, so lines from dryness look softer.
  • Don’t smoke: it damages collagen and deepens lines around the mouth.

Choosing a treatment 4

01

What is the best treatment for wrinkles?

It depends on the kind of line, which the doctor checks first.

Lines that come with movement, such as forehead lines and crow’s feet, respond best to Botox; fine lines from dry, thinning skin to boosters such as Profhilo; and deeper, set-in lines to RF microneedling or fillers. Many people do best with two together.

02

Botox or fillers for wrinkles?

Botox for lines made by muscles, fillers for folds made by lost volume.

Frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet come from movement, so Botox relaxes the muscle. Smile lines and folds are there at rest, so fillers fill them straight away, for 6–12 months.

03

What helps fine lines under the eyes?

Gentle treatments made for thin skin.

In a split-face trial, salmon DNA (PDRN) improved elasticity, hydration and roughness around the eyes, and one Thermage session smoothed eye-area wrinkles in 83% of treated areas in a multicentre study. Crow’s feet that show when you smile respond to Botox.

04

Do anti-wrinkle creams work?

Some help a little; none matches treatment.

A prescription retinoid has the best evidence for fine lines, and daily sunscreen prevents new ones, but no cream relaxes a muscle or replaces lost collagen.

05

Can wrinkles be removed without surgery?

Most can be softened a lot.

Botox smooths moving lines in days, fillers fill deep folds straight away, and collagen treatments smooth the skin over months. Very deep lines improve rather than disappear.

06

How long does Botox last for wrinkles?

About 3–4 months, depending on the area and how strong your muscles are.

Lines come back gradually, so most people book a top-up every 3–4 months.

07

Will I look frozen?

Not when the dose is planned for your face.

Your doctor studies how your face moves and places small amounts, so lines soften while you can still frown and smile.

08

How much does wrinkle treatment cost?

It depends on the treatment and the areas you treat, so the doctor gives you an exact price at your free consultation.

Safety & recovery 2

09

Is Botox safe?

Yes, in trained hands.

It has been FDA-approved for frown lines since 2002, and a meta-analysis of global studies in 5,298 people looked at its safety for upper facial lines. Side effects are usually mild, such as small bruises at the injection points.

10

Is there downtime?

Usually very little.

You can go back to work straight after Botox; boosters leave small bumps for up to a day or two, and RF microneedling leaves redness for 1–3 days.
