How under-eye fillers work
A soft, fine hyaluronic acid filler is placed deep along the tear trough, the groove that runs from the inner corner of the eye towards the cheek. Filling this hollow means less light is trapped in it, so shadows soften and the area looks smoother. Doctors often use a blunt-tipped cannula here, which can reduce bruising.
Are under-eye fillers right for you?
Good candidates have hollowness or a visible groove under the eyes with reasonably good skin quality. Fillers are less suitable if:
- Your dark circles are mainly caused by pigmentation (skin colour) rather than hollowness
- You have large, puffy under-eye bags or significant fluid retention
- The skin under the eyes is very thin and crepey
In these cases, your doctor may recommend dark circle treatments, a skin booster such as salmon DNA (polynucleotides), or a combination. Under-eye fillers are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with an active infection in the area.
Your treatment, step by step
- Free consultation: your doctor works out what is causing your dark circles and whether filler will help.
- Numbing: a numbing cream is applied for comfort.
- Treatment: a small amount of filler is placed along each tear trough, usually taking around 30 minutes.
- Check: your doctor reviews symmetry and the result with you before you leave.
Results and how long they last
The improvement is visible straight away and settles fully over about two weeks as any swelling goes down. Under-eye fillers often last around nine to twelve months, and sometimes longer, because there is little movement in this area.
Recovery and aftercare
Mild swelling and bruising are more common under the eyes than in other areas, and usually fade within a week.
- Use a cold compress, wrapped in a cloth, to reduce swelling
- Sleep with your head slightly raised on the first night
- Avoid rubbing your eyes and pressing on the area
- Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and alcohol for 24–48 hours
Is it safe?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are widely used and well tolerated, and because they can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, the result is reversible. As with any filler, rare but serious complications, such as a filler blocking a blood vessel, can occur. That is why fillers should only be injected by a qualified doctor who knows facial anatomy and can act immediately if needed. At Cutera Aesthetics, every filler treatment is performed by our doctors.
