What is masseter Botox and how does it work?

Botox is a purified protein, botulinum toxin, that relaxes the muscle it is placed in. For masseter Botox, your doctor injects small doses into the masseter, the chewing muscle you feel bulge at the angle of your jaw when you clench. As it rests, the muscle steadily shrinks, so a square jaw looks slimmer and clenching eases. It slims muscle only, so a wide jaw from bone or fat needs a different plan. Who shouldn’t have masseter Botox?

Botox isn’t advised in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, with an infection at the injection site, or with a nerve-muscle condition such as myasthenia gravis. If bone or fat makes your jaw wide, a different plan works better. Your doctor checks this at your consultation.

Masseter Botox, step by step

1. Free consultation: your doctor feels your jaw muscle as you clench and checks your skin.
2. Preparation: the skin is cleansed and each injection point is marked.
3. Treatment: a few small injections on each side, in a visit of about 20 minutes.
4. Review: a check at two to four weeks to make sure both sides match.
5. Repeat: usually every 4–6 months, often less once the muscle has slimmed.

Results and recovery

There is no downtime, so you can go back to work straight away. Chewing tough food can feel tiring for a few weeks, and a small bruise or mild headache can happen.
