What can the CoolGlide laser treat?

Hair on brown or tanned skinSmooth skin, with a lower risk of marks.
Coarse body hairFar fewer hairs by the end of a course.
Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis)Calmer, clearer skin as hairs thin.
Fine and coarse hair togetherSettings tuned to each hair type.

How does the CoolGlide laser work?

CoolGlide was Cutera, Inc.’s first platform, launched in 2003. Its Nd:YAG hand piece sends 1064 nm light past the pigment in the skin’s surface, straight to the hair root, while a temperature-controlled copper plate cools the skin before and after every pulse.

That pairing is what makes it such a strong match for brown skin: the surface absorbs less heat, and the cooling protects it further. Cutera Aesthetics is an independent clinic group and is not part of Cutera, Inc.; ask to see the device and its details at your consultation.

Who shouldn’t have CoolGlide treatment?

CoolGlide isn’t used in pregnancy, over sunburn or a recent tan, on infected skin, or for grey, white or very light hair. Please mention cold sores, keloid scars or recent isotretinoin first, so your doctor can plan your sessions safely.

CoolGlide hair removal, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor checks your skin type, hair colour and the areas to treat.
  2. Patch test: test pulses at your planned settings, checked before the course begins.
  3. Preparation: shave the day before; on the day the skin is cleaned and a thin gel applied.
  4. Treatment: the cooled hand piece glides smoothly over the skin, pulse by pulse.
  5. Course: most people have 4–6 sessions, leaving 4–6 weeks between each.

Results and recovery

In the maker’s own data, patients have three to six treatments on average. And in a study of Indian women with skin types IV and V treated with CoolGlide, more than half had only fine, soft hair left after six sessions.

Redness and swelling around the hairs usually ease within hours to a day. In that study there were no lasting colour changes and blisters were rare, a reassuring record for brown skin.

Aftercare

  • Avoid sun and tanning for 2 weeks
  • No hot showers, gym or sauna for 24 hours
  • Shave only; no waxing between sessions
  • Ease warmth with a cool, damp cloth

CoolGlide: your questions answered

It depends on the areas treated and how many sessions your hair needs. Your doctor confirms the price for the whole course at your free consultation, so you know the full total before you start.

If you have brown or tanned skin and dark hair, it is a smart choice, because its wavelength is gentle on skin pigment while it targets the root. It won’t treat grey or white hair. For guidance by body area, see full-body laser hair removal.

You’ll feel each pulse as a quick, warm snap. The copper plate chills the skin before and after every pulse, which the FDA clearance lists as a way to reduce pain. Coarse hair can feel stronger at first, and it eases as the hair thins.

Treated hairs shed over the next few weeks. In the Indian study, results built at every visit, with the share of women left with only fine hair rising at each of the six sessions.

CoolGlide lasers are FDA-cleared for “permanent hair reduction”, which the FDA defines as a long-term, stable fall in hair counts 6, 9 and 12 months after a course. Some hair can return, and a top-up session thins it again.

In trained hands it has a good safety record on darker skin. Redness and swelling are common and short-lived. Blisters, burns and colour changes can happen if settings are wrong, which is why a doctor sets every treatment.

No. Cutera, Inc. is a US medical device company based in Brisbane, California, that makes CoolGlide. Cutera Aesthetics is a separate clinic group in Pakistan. Ask to see the device at your consultation.

Yes, and this is where it shines. The FDA clearance covers skin types I to VI, including tanned skin, and Indian women with skin types IV and V had no lasting darkening or lightening after six sessions.

Alexandrite (755 nm) and diode (800–810 nm) lasers work well on lighter skin. CoolGlide’s 1064 nm Nd:YAG reaches deeper with less absorption by skin pigment, so reviews treat it as the standard choice for darker skin.

Yes. The FDA has cleared CoolGlide lasers to treat pseudofolliculitis barbae, the bumps caused by shaved hairs growing back into the skin. See laser hair removal for men.

Ask to see the machine, its maker’s label and serial number. A genuine CoolGlide is made by Cutera, Inc., a US company. Your doctor can also tell you which hand piece and settings are used for you.

Yes, and starting early gives you smooth skin for every function. Begin six months or more before the day so the course finishes in time, leave at least two weeks after your final session, and skip tanning in between.
