What causes dark lips?
Lips darken when they make extra pigment. Common reasons are sun, smoking, genes (some people are simply born with darker lips), licking or picking the lips, reactions to lipstick or toothpaste, and some medicines and hormones. Rarely, a single dark spot needs checking, so your doctor examines your lips before any treatment.
How does lip pigmentation treatment work?
The pico laser sends very short pulses that shatter pigment into tiny particles your body clears away, with little heat, which suits brown skin. A lip peel is a mild peel made for the thin skin of the lips: it loosens the darker surface layer so it sheds, and lighter skin shows through. Your doctor chooses one or both for your lips.
Lip lasers have good evidence. In a study of 20 people given five pico sessions, 7 in 10 rated their lips moderately to markedly better six months later. In another study of 20 patients with brown skin, 7 in 10 had good to excellent clearing after about two to three laser sessions.
Lip pigmentation treatment benefits
- Pinker, more even lips: the extra pigment fades over the course.
- Less need for lipstick to hide colour: lips look good bare.
- Quick visits: about 10 minutes for a laser session.
- Little downtime: most people go straight back to their day.
- Made for brown skin: settings and peels chosen for your skin tone.
Other options for dark lips, and how they compare
Lip lightening creams can help a little over months, but results are slow and uneven, and some irritate lips and darken them more. A lip blush or “neutralisation” tattoo covers the colour rather than removing it; it is not a medical treatment and we don’t offer it. A daily SPF lip balm and stopping smoking don’t clear existing darkness, but they are what keeps your result.

Who shouldn’t have lip pigmentation treatment?
Please wait if you are pregnant, have a cold sore on your lips (it is treated first), have a fresh tan, or have taken isotretinoin (Roaccutane) recently. Any spot on the lip your doctor hasn’t checked is examined before treatment.
Your lip pigmentation treatment, step by step
- Free consultation: your doctor checks your lips, finds the likely cause and plans laser, peel or both.
- Prepare: numbing cream if needed, and eye protection for the laser.
- Session: about 10 minutes of laser, or a few minutes of peel.
- Course: usually 3–5 laser sessions about four weeks apart, or a short course of peels.
- Keep it: a daily SPF lip balm, no lip licking, and less or no smoking.
Results and recovery
Lips look lighter over the course. Expect slight swelling for a short while, and treated spots can darken and flake for up to a week as the pigment clears. Colour can come back with sun or smoking, so a top-up and daily lip protection keep lips even.
Aftercare
- Don’t pick or peel flaking skin
- No lipstick for a day or two
- SPF lip balm every day
- Avoid smoking while lips heal
