HIFU Facelift

HIFU Facelift

Has your jawline softened, or have your cheeks and brows started to drop, but surgery feels like too much? HIFU is a non-surgical lift: focused ultrasound heats the deep support layers under your skin, so your body builds fresh collagen and your face lifts and tightens over two to three months.

Best for mild to moderate sagging on the jawline, cheeks, brows and neck.

How does HIFU work?

HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. A handpiece focuses ultrasound energy onto tiny points at set depths under the skin, down to the firm layer that supports your face, while the surface stays intact. At Cutera we use Ultraformer, a HIFU system made by Classys in South Korea.

Each point of heat tightens existing collagen and starts a repair response, so new collagen forms over the following weeks. In studies, brows lifted by up to about 2 mm and most people had firmer skin at three months. It lifts from within, without a single cut.

Who shouldn’t have HIFU?

It isn’t suitable during pregnancy, with an infection, open wound or severe active acne in the area, or with a pacemaker or metal implant there. Very loose skin may need surgery instead. Your doctor checks this at your consultation.

HIFU treatment, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor checks how loose your skin is and maps the areas.
  2. Preparation: the skin is cleansed and marked; numbing cream if you’d like it.
  3. Treatment: lines of ultrasound pulses along the face and neck, taking 45–90 minutes.
  4. Results: skin tightens gradually, with the main result at 2–3 months.
  5. Top-up: usually once a year to keep results going.

Results and recovery

A first tightening can show straight away, then the real lift builds over two to three months as new collagen forms. Studies show results holding for at least a year, depending on your age, skin and weight.

Mild redness or swelling usually settles within hours to a few days, and the area can feel tender. Tingling or numbness is uncommon and fades. Most people go back to work the same day.

Aftercare

  • Make-up is fine the same day
  • Skip sauna and steam for 24–48 hours
  • Be gentle with tender areas for a few days
  • Wear sunscreen every day

Patient stories

HIFU: your questions answered

It depends on the areas treated, such as the full face, the jawline or the neck. Your doctor confirms the full price at your free consultation, before anything is done. HIFU is usually a single session, so ask what is included for each area.

For mild to moderate sagging, yes: it gives a natural-looking lift with no cuts and little downtime, and in studies results held for at least a year. Very loose skin responds less, and for a quicker, more visible lift a thread lift is the better choice.

It can be uncomfortable. You’ll feel deep heat and prickling pulses, strongest over the jawline and bony areas, and studies rate it as moderate on average. Numbing cream helps, and your doctor adjusts the energy as you go.

A first tightening can show on the day. The main result builds over two to three months as new collagen forms, and skin can keep improving for a few months after that.

Studies show results holding for at least a year. Your skin keeps ageing naturally, so most people repeat HIFU about once a year to keep their lift.

Yes, when a trained doctor uses the right settings. Expect mild redness, swelling or tenderness for hours to a few days. Bruising, tingling or numbness is uncommon and fades. Burns or raised lines are rare, so careful technique matters. It isn’t done in pregnancy.

No. A surgical facelift removes and repositions skin, so the lift is bigger and lasts longer. HIFU tightens from within with no cuts, so the change is natural and gradual, and you don’t need time off work.

They are different technologies that tighten skin in different ways. HIFU focuses ultrasound deep, onto the face’s support layer, to lift. Radiofrequency skin tightening warms the skin more evenly over a course of sessions, to firm and smooth it. Your doctor picks the one that fits your skin.

A thread lift places dissolving threads under the skin for an instant, more visible lift. HIFU uses no needles and works gradually through new collagen. Some people combine them, and your doctor advises which suits your face.

Yes, when loose skin is the cause: it tightens skin under the chin for a neater jawline. If the fullness is mainly fat, double chin reduction works better. For a sharper jaw, see HIFU for face sculpting.

Usually one. Collagen keeps building for months afterwards, so a second session is rarely needed straight away. Most people have a top-up about once a year.

Yes, but plan ahead. Have it about three months before the day, so the main result has built and any tenderness is long gone. Avoid the last few weeks, while slight swelling could still show.
