What is HIFU for a double chin and how does it work?
HIFU, or high-intensity focused ultrasound, focuses energy onto tiny points at set depths under the skin, reaching the firm support layer beneath the chin and along the jaw while the surface stays intact. Each point of heat tightens collagen and starts a repair response, so new collagen firms the area over the following weeks. We use the Ultraformer, and your doctor chooses the depths for your chin and jaw. It is the same technology as our HIFU facelift, aimed at the lower face only.

HIFU or fat reduction for a double chin?
A double chin is fat, loose skin or both, and HIFU treats the skin. If you can pinch a soft roll of fat under your chin, fat-dissolving injections or fat freezing remove it better; double chin treatment compares all four methods. If the fullness is mostly slack skin, or the fat has gone and looseness is left, HIFU tightens it. Many people combine the two, treating fat first and tightening last, and your doctor checks which applies at your consultation.

A light tightening can show on the day, but the main change builds over two to three months as new collagen forms, so compare side-on photos at three months, in the same light. In a 3D-scan study of 50 people treated on the Ultraformer, the jaw area lifted by about 3 mm and the neck by about 3.5 mm straight after treatment. Who shouldn’t have HIFU on the chin and jaw?
HIFU isn’t suitable during pregnancy, with an infection, open wound or active acne along the jaw, or with a pacemaker or a metal implant in the area. Tell your doctor about recent fillers or threads there. Fullness that is mostly fat, or very heavy jowls, needs another approach, and your doctor checks this at your consultation.
Your HIFU double chin treatment, step by step
- Free consultation: your doctor pinches under the chin to check whether loose skin or fat is the cause.
- Preparation: the chin and jaw are cleansed and mapped, with numbing cream if you’d like it.
- Treatment: lines of ultrasound under the chin and along the jaw, about 30–45 minutes.
- Results: the area firms gradually, with the main change at two to three months.
- Top-up: one session about once a year keeps the contour.
Results and recovery
Your chin and jaw may feel tender, or look a little pink and puffy, for a few hours to a few days, and you can go straight back to work. Brief tingling or numbness along the jaw is uncommon and fades. The firmer outline builds quietly over two to three months, and a yearly session keeps it crisp as your face keeps ageing.
