How does a salicylic acid peel work?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). Unlike most peeling acids, it dissolves in oil, so it travels deep into oily pores, loosens the dead cells and sebum that block them, and cuts down shine. It calms redness and swelling too.

Your doctor applies a 20–30% solution for a few minutes. In a 12-week study of people with acne, peels every two weeks cut acne scores by more than half. It works near the surface, which is why recovery is so quick; deeper acne scars need other treatments.

Who shouldn’t have a salicylic acid peel?

It isn’t suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you are allergic to aspirin or salicylates, or with sunburnt, broken or infected skin or an active cold sore in the area. Your doctor checks this at your consultation.

Salicylic acid peel, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor checks your skin type and acne and plans your course.
  2. Preparation: the skin is cleansed and degreased; sensitive spots are protected.
  3. Treatment: the peel stays on for 3–5 minutes, then is rinsed off; about 20–30 minutes in all.
  4. Course: usually 3–6 peels, 2–4 weeks apart.
  5. Maintenance: a top-up peel every few months, with a simple routine at home.

Results and recovery

Your skin feels smoother and less oily within a week of the first peel. Blackheads and breakouts settle steadily through the course, as your pores stay clearer for longer.

Expect warmth and stinging during the peel, then mild redness and light flaking for a few days. Most people go back to work the same day, and daily sun protection keeps dark marks away.

Aftercare

  • No make-up for 24 hours
  • Don’t pick or peel flaking skin
  • Pause retinol and scrubs for a few days
  • Wear sunscreen every day

Salicylic acid peel: your questions answered

It depends on your skin, the strength of peel and how many sessions you need. Your doctor confirms the full price at your free consultation, before anything is done. A course works far better than one peel, so ask for the price of all the peels together.

For blackheads, oily skin and mild to moderate acne, yes: it is quick, has little downtime, and in a study more than halved acne scores over 12 weeks. Severe or cystic acne needs medical treatment first, so your doctor may suggest a wider acne treatment plan instead.

Not much. Most people feel warmth, tingling or stinging for a minute or two. Salicylic acid also has a mild numbing effect, so the feeling eases quickly while the peel is on.

Skin feels smoother and less oily within a week. Breakouts and blackheads ease from about two weeks, and keep improving over a course of three to six peels.

With a good skincare routine, your clearer skin lasts for months. Because acne is driven by hormones and oil, a top-up peel every few months keeps it under control.

Yes, when a trained doctor does it, and it suits all skin types, including darker skin. Expect mild redness, dryness and flaking for a few days. Dark marks are uncommon, and sun protection keeps them that way. It isn’t used in pregnancy.

Yes. It is one of the most useful peels for blackheads and whiteheads, because it works inside oily pores. It clears them over a course, and a simple routine at home keeps new ones from building up.

Both are light peels. Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it suits oily, acne-prone skin and blackheads. A glycolic peel works on the surface and suits dullness and uneven tone. Your doctor matches the peel to your skin.

It fades the red and dark marks that spots leave behind. It doesn’t lift pitted acne scars; for those, a TCA peel for acne scars or Infini RF microneedling usually work better.

Usually three to six, two to four weeks apart, depending on your skin and how active your acne is. Your doctor reviews your progress at each visit and adjusts the plan.

Often yes, but tell your doctor about everything you use. Retinoid creams and scrubs are usually paused for a few days before and after, and some acne tablets need extra care. Your doctor fits the peels around your medicines.

Yes, for clear skin in your photos. Start two to three months before so your course is complete, and have your last peel at least a week before the day, so any flaking has settled. Avoid trying a new peel in the final weeks.
