Microneedling for Pigmentation

Microneedling for Pigmentation

Do dark patches on your cheeks and forehead keep coming back, however much cream you use? Microneedling for pigmentation is a doctor-led treatment: fine needles open tiny channels so a brightening serum reaches deeper into your skin, fading melasma and uneven tone visit by visit, alongside daily sunscreen.

Best for melasma, patchy uneven tone and dark marks left by acne.

What can microneedling do for uneven skin tone?

MelasmaClearly lighter, easier-to-control patches.
Patchy, uneven skin toneA more even, brighter-looking complexion.
Dark marks after acneMarks that fade faster than on their own.
Dull, tired-looking skinFresher skin with a healthy glow.

How does microneedling help pigmentation?

For pigmentation, the needles are set shallow, usually no deeper than 1.5 mm. They open thousands of short-lived channels, and a serum such as tranexamic acid or vitamin C is spread over them, so far more of it reaches the cells that make pigment than a cream alone can.

As your skin heals, its tone evens out. In one trial of 60 people, microneedling with tranexamic acid improved melasma scores by 44%, ahead of 36% for injections. It calms pigment rather than removing it, so daily sunscreen keeps your result.

Who shouldn’t have microneedling for pigmentation?

It isn’t suitable in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, with a cold sore, infection or acne flare in the area, if you form keloid scars, or soon after isotretinoin. Your doctor waits until any tan has settled.

Microneedling for pigmentation, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor checks whether your patches are melasma, sun spots or acne marks.
  2. Preparation: cleansing, then numbing cream for about 30 minutes.
  3. Treatment: shallow needling with a brightening serum, about 20–30 minutes.
  4. Course: 3–6 sessions, each 4–6 weeks after the last.
  5. Home care: daily sunscreen and any cream your doctor prescribes.

Pigmentation results and recovery

Patches start to lighten from about four weeks, with a clear change by three months. Melasma is long-term, so sun, heat and hormones can bring it back; broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, reapplied through the day, protects your result.

Your skin looks pink or flushed for one to three days and can feel tight, and on brown skin it can briefly look darker. Most people return to work the next day.

Aftercare

  • No make-up for 24 hours
  • Avoid heat, gym and steam for 48 hours
  • Don’t scrub or pick at dry skin
  • SPF 30+ daily, reapply outdoors

Microneedling: your questions answered

The price depends on the size of the area, the serum used and how many sessions your patches need. You hear the full price at your free consultation. Pigmentation needs a course, so ask for the whole plan.

Yes, as a proven add-on to sunscreen and prescribed creams for melasma and patchy tone: the serum reaches deeper, so patches fade more than with cream alone. Small, sharply defined sun spots and freckles often respond faster to picosecond laser.

Very little. The needles are set shallow and numbing cream goes on first, so most people feel only light prickling. The serum can sting for a minute or two, and your face may feel warm that evening.

Reviews show patches start to lighten from about four weeks, with a clear change by about three months. Dermatologists say melasma treatment usually takes three to twelve months, so each session builds steadily on the last.

That depends on your sun habits and hormones. Melasma often returns after strong sun or heat, so daily sunscreen and an occasional top-up session keep patches under control.

Yes, when a doctor uses shallow needles and sterile serums. Pinkness and tightness usually settle within three days. Dark marks after treatment are uncommon but possible on brown skin, which is why the depth stays gentle.

Yes. Tranexamic acid calms the signals that tell skin to make pigment, and microneedling helps it soak in. A 2026 review found it worked about as well as vitamin C in short trials, so your doctor can choose either.

Microneedling lightens patches and makes them much easier to keep under control. Melasma has no lasting cure yet, and triggers such as sun, heat, pregnancy and birth control pills can bring it back, so ongoing sunscreen matters.

Each suits different marks. A glycolic peel gently resurfaces, lasers target set spots, and RF microneedling adds heat. Plain microneedling is gentle on melasma-prone skin. Your doctor may combine them.

The device is the same, but the plan differs. Pigmentation needs shallow needles and a serum, while microneedling for anti-ageing and microneedling for acne scars go deeper to build collagen.

Not while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Melasma that appears in pregnancy sometimes fades on its own after the birth, so your doctor may suggest waiting, then treating what remains.

Yes, with planning. Begin four to five months ahead, as patches fade over months. Book your last session three weeks before the day, and keep up sunscreen during wedding shopping and outdoor events.
