How are acne and acne scars treated?

Acne and scars need different treatments, and getting the order right is what makes the plan work. Active acne comes first, with the right skincare, medicine where needed, and treatments such as a salicylic acid peel or Hydrafacial, because new breakouts cause new scars.

Once spots are under control, scars are treated by rebuilding collagen: Microneedling RF or a TCA peel for pitted scars, and the Picosecond laser for marks. Raised scars get their own care, such as injections. A large review found men scar more often than women, so starting early pays off.

Who should wait before scar treatment?

Scar treatment should wait while you have active or cystic acne, an infection or a cold sore in the area, or soon after isotretinoin. Tell your doctor about every acne medicine you have used in the last two years.

Acne and scar treatment, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor checks your breakouts, marks and scar types.
  2. Clear active acne: skincare, medicine if needed, and peels or facials, over 6–8 weeks.
  3. Treat scars: microneedling RF, a TCA peel or laser, chosen for your scar type.
  4. Course: usually 3–5 sessions, a few weeks apart, each taking 30–60 minutes.
  5. Maintenance: a simple daily routine and sunscreen to keep new breakouts away.

Results and recovery

With a steady plan, breakouts start to settle within six to eight weeks. Then every scar session builds fresh collagen, so pits look shallower and your skin feels smoother as the course goes on.

Peels and facials need little or no downtime, so you can go straight back to work. Microneedling RF or a TCA peel can leave redness, flaking or mild swelling for a few days, and your doctor plans those sessions around your diary.

Aftercare

  • Wear oil-free sunscreen every day
  • Don’t pick or squeeze spots
  • No gym or sauna for 48 hours after needling
  • Don’t shave treated skin for 24 hours

Acne treatment: your questions answered

It depends on your scar type, which treatments you need and how many sessions. Your doctor confirms the full price at your free consultation, before anything is done. Most men need a course of three to five sessions, so ask for the price of the whole plan.

Yes. Many men see scars become shallower and marks fade, and feel far more confident. Scar work isn’t started while acne is still active, and severe cystic acne needs medicine first. For deep scars, RF microneedling for acne scars is often the main treatment.

Most men find it very manageable. Peels and facials feel like tingling or warmth. For microneedling and laser, numbing cream goes on first, so you mainly feel pressure and prickling.

Active breakouts start to calm within six to eight weeks of a steady plan. Scars keep improving over a few months, as new collagen builds after each session.

Your smoother skin is long-lasting, because it comes from your own new collagen. Keeping acne under control protects that result, since new breakouts can leave new scars.

Yes, when a trained doctor chooses the right treatment for your skin. Expect redness, flaking or mild swelling for a few days after deeper treatments. Darker marks can occur on brown skin, which careful settings and daily sunscreen help prevent.

Deep, narrow ice-pick scars often respond to a TCA peel. Wider rolling or boxcar scars suit microneedling or RF microneedling. Flat red or brown marks fade with the Picosecond laser. Many men need a mix.

Most scars won’t vanish completely, but treatment makes them shallower, smoother and far less noticeable, and many men are happy with the change. Your doctor shows you what to expect at your consultation.

Yes. Use a clean, sharp razor, shave gently in the direction of hair growth and avoid shaving over inflamed spots. After microneedling, laser or a peel, skip shaving the treated skin for at least 24 hours.

Marks are flat red or brown patches left after a spot; they fade with time and treatment. Scars change the skin’s surface, as pits or bumps. Marks can respond to mesotherapy or laser; scars need collagen-building treatments.

Tell your doctor first. Some scar treatments can cause side effects if started during or soon after isotretinoin. Your doctor times your plan safely, often clearing acne first and treating scars afterwards.

Yes, but start early. Begin four to six months before the day, so acne is controlled and your scar sessions are finished. Avoid deeper treatments in the last two to three weeks, while redness could still show.
