PRP for Hair

Hair Threads

Are your temples edging back, or is your crown beginning to show? Hair threads are fine, dissolving PDO threads placed under the scalp to wake up thinning follicles. Your doctor finds the cause first, then pairs threads with proven care such as PRP, for a stronger push on thinning hair.

Best for men with early receding or crown thinning, alongside PRP or minoxidil.

What can hair threads do for men’s hair loss?

A receding hairlineExtra support for weak hairs at the temples.
Thinning at the crownMore cover, together with your main treatment.
Early male-pattern baldnessA boost for your ongoing hair plan.
Slow progress on minoxidil or PRPAn added push on top of your plan.

How do hair threads work?

Most hair loss in men is male-pattern baldness: inherited follicles slowly shrink under male hormones, first at the temples or crown. Hair threads use PDO (polydioxanone), the dissolving stitch material also used in thread lifts. Short, very thin threads are slipped under the thinning scalp with fine needles, and your body absorbs them over six to eight months.

Each thread sets off a gentle healing response, designed to boost blood flow and wake up nearby follicles. Dermatologists first reported the method as effective and safe in 2017, and threads always sit on top of proven care, for the strongest result.

Who shouldn’t have hair threads?

Threads aren’t for you with an infected or inflamed scalp, bleeding problems, blood-thinning medicine or a tendency to keloid scars. Sudden shedding, round bald patches or a scaly scalp are diagnosed first, so you get the right care.

Hair threads for men, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor maps your hairline and crown and finds the cause, with blood tests if needed.
  2. Preparation: photos are taken for comparison; the scalp is cleaned and numbed.
  3. Treatment: fine threads go under the thinning zones in 30–45 minutes.
  4. Course: typically 3 sessions, one every 4 weeks.
  5. Ongoing plan: minoxidil, PRP or prescribed tablets carry on, as your doctor advises.

Results and recovery

Judge your progress three to six months after the last session, side by side with your before photos. Threads are there to add support, while the proven treatments in your plan, such as PRP, do the heavy lifting, so together they give your hairline and crown the most help.

Your scalp can feel tender, swollen or bruised for a few days. Now and then a thread end is felt under the skin, pokes through or gets infected; your doctor sorts this out quickly.

Aftercare

  • Don’t scratch or rub the scalp for a week
  • Keep caps and helmets loose for a week
  • Skip workouts and steam rooms for 2–3 days
  • Gentle shampoo next day; no gel for 3 days

Hair threads: your questions answered

The price depends on how much of your hairline and crown is treated, the number of threads and whether PRP is added. Your doctor prices the full course at your free consultation, and nothing is done until you agree, so ask about all three sessions.

They are worth it as an add-on once a proven plan is under way. If you haven’t yet tried minoxidil, doctor-prescribed tablets or PRP for the scalp, start there, as they have far more research behind them, then add threads for an extra push.

Your scalp is numbed first, so you mostly feel pressure and the odd sharp prick as each thread goes in. Any soreness in the treated areas fades within two or three days.

Steadily. Follicles take months to respond, so judge the change three to six months after the course, using your before photos. Even minoxidil, a proven treatment, usually takes 6 to 12 months, so patience pays off.

The threads dissolve in about six to eight months. Male-pattern baldness keeps going, so your gains hold while the cause is treated; minoxidil and prescription tablets work for as long as you keep using them.

Yes, when a doctor places them under sterile conditions. Tenderness, swelling and small bruises are usual for a few days. Across studies of facial threads, about 2 in 100 people had an infection and 2 in 100 a thread pushing out, and both are treatable.

Threads are used to support the weak hairs still growing at the temples, while proven treatment started early helps you keep your hairline. They can’t regrow a fully bald area, though.

The first report, a 2017 letter by dermatologists, called scalp threading a novel, effective and safe option for hair restoration. Controlled trials are still to come, while a 2022 review pooled 30 trials in men for PRP, minoxidil and tablets, so threads go on top of those.

Start with the proven options. Minoxidil and prescription tablets a doctor may discuss slow loss and can regrow some hair, and PRP for hair loss uses growth factors from your own blood. Threads then go on top, as an extra boost.

Male-pattern baldness often begins in the late teens or twenties and runs in families. Illness, a vitamin deficiency or a hormone problem can also cause shedding, so your doctor finds the cause before any treatment, and starting early helps.

No, Cutera Aesthetics doesn’t offer hair transplants. If your hairline or crown is fully bald, your doctor tells you plainly whether seeing a transplant surgeon makes sense. Women can read about scalp threads.

Yes, with time to spare. Give yourself four to six months, so the course and any tenderness are long over, and keep your last session at least three weeks before the barber and the photos.
