Thermage/ RadioFrequency

Does your skin feel looser than it used to, especially along your jaw and around your eyes? Thermage is a non-surgical skin-tightening treatment: radiofrequency gently heats the deeper skin to tighten collagen and spark fresh collagen growth, so your skin looks smoother and firmer after just one session.

Best for mild to moderate loose skin on the face, eyes, jaw and body.

How does Thermage work?

Thermage FLX is made by Solta Medical, a US company. It uses monopolar radiofrequency, energy that heats the deeper layers of the skin evenly, while the surface is cooled and the handpiece vibrates for comfort. In use since 2002, it was the first monopolar radiofrequency device cleared by the US FDA for treating wrinkles.

The heat tightens existing collagen and prompts your skin to build fresh collagen over the following months, while the system fine-tunes its energy as it works. It firms and smooths; it doesn’t add volume or lift like surgery.

Who shouldn’t have Thermage?

It isn’t suitable with a pacemaker, defibrillator or other electrical implant, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with cold sores in the area. Tell your doctor about fillers, tattoos, diabetes or epilepsy. Your doctor checks this at your consultation.

Thermage treatment, step by step

  1. Free consultation: your doctor checks your skin and chooses the areas and tips.
  2. Preparation: the skin is cleansed and marked with a temporary guide grid.
  3. Treatment: radiofrequency pulses with cooling, taking 30–60 minutes.
  4. Results: skin can feel tighter at once and improves over 2–6 months.
  5. Maintenance: many people repeat it once a year.

Results and recovery

Your skin can feel tighter straight after treatment. The main change builds over the next two to six months as new collagen forms, and results can last one to two years, depending on your skin and how it ages.

Mild redness usually fades within 24 hours, and slight swelling can last a few days. Most people go straight back to their day. Burns, blisters or small lumps under the skin are uncommon.

Aftercare

  • Back to normal activities straight away
  • Keep to gentle, basic skincare
  • A cool compress eases any swelling
  • Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily

Thermage: your questions answered

The price depends on the areas treated, such as the full face, the eyes or the tummy. Your doctor sets out the full price at your free consultation, before any treatment. It is usually a single session, so there is no course to add up.

Yes, for mild to moderate loose skin: one session firms and smooths your skin with little downtime, and results last one to two years. It won’t lift heavy sagging like surgery; for more lift along the jaw, a thread lift is the better choice.

You’ll feel brief bursts of deep heat, each followed by cooling, and the handpiece vibrates to ease discomfort. Most people find it manageable, and your doctor adjusts the energy to your comfort as you go.

Skin can feel tighter straight away. The main result builds over two to six months as your skin makes new collagen, for a gradual, natural-looking change.

Usually one to two years, depending on your skin and how it ages. Many people repeat it once a year to keep their skin firm.

Yes, in a trained doctor’s hands. Mild redness usually fades within 24 hours and swelling within a few days. Burns, blisters, small lumps or temporary numbness are uncommon. It isn’t used with a pacemaker or other electrical implant, or during pregnancy.

No. Thermage uses no needles: it heats the skin through the surface with radiofrequency and cooling. Microneedling RF uses fine needles to deliver the energy, and suits acne scars and texture more than loose skin.

They tighten skin in different ways. Thermage heats the skin evenly with radiofrequency to firm and smooth it, including around the eyes. HIFU focuses ultrasound deeper to lift the brows, jaw and neck. Your doctor recommends the right one for your skin and goals.

Yes. A small eye tip treats the eyelids and the skin around the eyes for mild to moderate looseness, with protective eye shields in place. In a multicentre study, one session smoothed eye-area wrinkles in 83% of treated areas.

Yes. A larger body tip treats loose skin on the tummy, thighs, above the knees or under the bra line, for example after pregnancy or weight loss. To reduce fat rather than tighten skin, see CoolSculpting.

Usually just one. Unlike many skin treatments, Thermage is designed to work in a single session, with results improving for months. A yearly session helps keep them going.

Yes, and it fits wedding plans well. Have it three to six months before the day, so the new collagen has time to build. Avoid the last two weeks, while slight swelling could still show.
