What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is the everyday name for botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein given in tiny doses to relax the small muscles that crease your skin. As those muscles rest, the skin over them smooths out, while the rest of your face moves as usual. We offer two: Allergan Botox, the original American brand approved by the US FDA for frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines, and Korean Botox, which works the same way and costs less.

Botox for forehead wrinkles, frown lines and crow’s feet

These three upper-face areas respond best, because muscle movement causes the lines. The original Allergan label uses 20 units for frown lines, 24 for crow’s feet and 40 for the forehead and frown lines together, so all three fit comfortably within one 100-unit vial. Your doctor watches how your face moves, then places each dose to soften the lines while keeping your brows natural.

In pooled studies of 621 people treated for frown lines, 84% responded at one month, and for them the effect lasted a median of about four months. Who shouldn’t have Botox?

It isn’t suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an infection where it would be injected, or if you have a nerve-muscle condition such as myasthenia gravis. Tell your doctor about any blood thinners, recent antibiotics or a previous reaction to botulinum toxin; your doctor checks all of this at your consultation.

Your Botox, step by step

1. Free consultation: your doctor studies how your face moves and plans each point.
2. Preparation: the skin is cleansed and the points are marked; numbing is rarely needed.
3. Treatment: a few tiny injections with a very fine needle; about 20–30 minutes in all.
4. Review: a check at about two weeks, with a fine-tune if needed.
5. Top-up: every three to four months to keep lines smooth.

Results and recovery

Lines start to soften within three to five days, and the full, smooth result shows at about two weeks; it usually lasts three to four months, depending on the area and how strong your muscles are. Small bumps at the injection points fade within an hour, a tiny bruise can happen, and most people go straight back to work.
