What is CoolSculpting and how does it work?

CoolSculpting is the original fat freezing treatment, known medically as cryolipolysis. Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the skin and muscle around them, so a cup-shaped applicator draws the fat in with gentle suction and cools it until those fat cells die off, while your skin stays unharmed. Over the following weeks your body breaks them down and clears them naturally. We use the genuine CoolSculpting device, made by Allergan Aesthetics and the first of its kind authorised by the US FDA; other fat freezing machines copy the idea but are not CoolSculpting.

CoolSculpting for belly fat and love handles

The lower tummy and love handles are where most people choose fat freezing, because fat there often stays however well you eat and train. For the tummy, a large applicator treats the soft bulge below the navel; for love handles, Duo applicators work on both sides at the same time, so your waist slims evenly. It suits pinchable fat when you are near your ideal weight. Hard fat deep inside the belly, around the organs, doesn’t respond, and is reduced only by losing weight.

CoolSculpting before and after

Nothing looks different on the day. The change starts to show at about one month, is clearer at two, and reaches its full effect at about three months, once your body has cleared the treated fat. Who shouldn’t have CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting isn’t suitable with a cold-related blood condition such as cryoglobulinaemia or cold agglutinin disease, during pregnancy, or with a hernia or recent surgery in the area. It isn’t a treatment for obesity or for loose skin. Your doctor checks all of this at your consultation.

Your CoolSculpting, step by step

1. Free consultation: your doctor checks the fat can be pinched and plans the areas.
2. Preparation: the area is marked and a protective gel pad is placed on the skin.
3. Treatment: the applicator cools each area for about 45–75 minutes while you read or rest.
4. Massage: the treated area is massaged for a few minutes afterwards.
5. Review: photos at about three months, and a second session if you want more slimming.

Results and recovery

There is no downtime: most people go straight back to work. The area can be red, swollen, bruised, tender or numb for a few weeks, and some people feel aching or cramping for a few days. Rarely, the treated fat slowly grows firmer and larger a few months later instead of shrinking; it doesn’t settle on its own, so tell us if you notice it.
